Parallax Wallet updates itself. Your wallet, your settings and the node’s data are kept in their own folders (see Files on your computer), so an update never touches them.

Checking for updates

The app looks for a new release shortly after it starts, then every 30 minutes. To stop the background checks, turn off Settings → General → Check for updates automatically. You can still check at any time with Check for updates in Settings → About. When a new version is out, an Update button appears in the top bar. It opens what’s new: the release notes of every version between yours and the latest. Settings → About → Release notes shows the notes of every version up to the one you’re running. With Use Tor on (Settings → Privacy), the check and the download go through Tor.

Installing an update

Choose Update. The app downloads the new version, then checks it against the release’s SHA256SUMS.txt. If the file doesn’t match, or the checksums can’t be read, nothing is installed. Then: Choose Restart now when you’re ready. Your node stops cleanly and starts again with the app. If an update fails, the app says why, with Retry. You can always update by hand instead.

Updating by hand

1

Download the new version

From the releases page, download the file for your computer (see Installing) and SHA256SUMS.txt.
2

Check the download

Compare the file’s SHA-256 with its line in SHA256SUMS.txt:
On Linux and macOS, the file must print OK. On Windows, compare the hash printed with the one in SHA256SUMS.txt.
3

Replace the old version

Quit Parallax Wallet first.
  • Windows: run the new installer, or replace the portable .exe.
  • macOS: drag the new Parallax Wallet to Applications, replacing the old one.
  • Linux: replace the old AppImage with the new one, and make it executable (chmod +x).

Offline signers

An offline signer never goes online, so it never checks for updates. Update it by hand: download and check the new version on another computer, then carry it over, for example on a USB stick.
