# Offline signing in Parallax Wallet

> Keep your keys on a computer that never goes online, and send from another one with a watch-only account.

For the most careful setups, Parallax Wallet can keep your keys on a
computer that never connects to the network. That computer, the
**offline signer**, only signs. Your everyday computer runs the wallet
with its node, follows the same accounts as **watch-only**, prepares
each transfer, and broadcasts it once it's signed.

They pass transfers back and forth as QR codes, held up to each
computer's camera, or as files, so the signer never needs a network.

***

## What you need

* A computer that will stay offline, with Parallax Wallet installed as an
  **Offline signer**. Install the app on it before taking it offline;
  it never checks for updates, so install new versions by hand.
* Your everyday computer with Parallax Wallet and its node.
* A camera on each, or a way to carry files between them, such as a USB
  stick.

## Set up

<Steps>
  <Step title="Make the offline computer a signer">
    At first launch choose **Offline signer**, or turn on **Settings →
    General → Offline signer**. It never starts a node, and it hides
    everything that needs the network.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add your accounts on the signer">
    Create or import them there, as on any wallet; see
    [Accounts](./accounts).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Follow them from your everyday computer">
    On the signer, choose **Show for watch-only** next to an account to
    show its address as a QR code. On your everyday computer, add it with
    **Settings → Accounts → Import accounts → Watch an address**, and scan
    it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

***

## Send

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create a signing request">
    On your everyday computer, choose the watch-only account and **Send**
    as usual, then **Create signing request**. The app shows it as a QR
    code, and **Save file…** saves it. You can leave the page: the
    request waits on the **Overview** until it's signed.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign it offline">
    On the signer, choose **Scan a signing request**, then scan the QR
    code or open the file. Check that the fingerprint matches the one your
    everyday computer shows, and that the amount and the recipient are
    what you meant to send. Then **Sign**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Broadcast it">
    The signer shows the signed transaction as a QR code, or saves it as a
    file. On your everyday computer, **Scan signed transaction** (or
    **Broadcast** in the sidebar) and send it to the network.
  </Step>
</Steps>

**Broadcast** also takes a raw signed transaction from the
`parallax-wallet` command-line tool.

## Good to know

* Only plain LAX transfers can be signed offline.
* **Fee cap** in **Settings → General** on the signer is the most fee a
  signed transfer may pay; a request above it is refused.
* If the signer has already signed a different transfer from the same
  account with the same nonce, it warns you: only one of them can go
  through.
* To call off a request that's waiting, choose **Cancel with a
  replacement** on the **Overview**: it makes a new request that sends 0
  LAX back to the account, which you sign and broadcast like any other.
  **Discard** only stops the wallet following it.
* **Sign message** works the same way for watch-only accounts: the
  request goes to the signer as a QR code.
